Inspector97 has a poll right now recognizing all the animated series celebrating anniversaries in 2017, and it dawned on me that one of my favorite shows of all time is celebrating it's 50th anniversary this year; The Herculoids, Hanna-Barbera, 1967.  I loved this show.  I know that most episodes had basically the same plot, but I loved the characters, Tara, the action, Tara, the adventure, Tara, the art, Tara...
Seriously, the characters were awesome.  There was Zandor, their leader, Tara, his wife, and Dorno, their son.  As a kid, I'd think that I'd give anything to be him.  The Herculoids were an awesome assembly of fantastic creatures; my favorite of the bunch was Tundro the tremendous, sort of an armored rhinoceros who could fire exploding rocks from his horns.  There was Zak, a flying dragon who could fire laser beams from his eyes and tail.  Igoo, a giant, powerful rock ape, and finally, Gloop and Gleep, two formless creatures that, in normal appearance had an almost ghost-like appearance.  They could stretch to unbelievable lengths, change into any shape or form.  More than once, they turned into parachutes.  I'd say those two were the most indestructible of the bunch.
There was an impressive array of bad guys the Herculoids would have to do battle with in each episode, in order to protect their planet and the other inhabitants who lived there.
As I said previously, I loved the artwork.  The scenery, whether jungle, mountainous, or even barren, was meticulous.  The characters, good and bad, were drawn exceptionally well.  Especially Tara.  Have I mentioned her?  If ever I had a "cartoon crush", it was her.  All of Hanna-Barbera's girls were unbelievably gorgeous, from Sheera (Mighty Mightor), to Jade (Jonny Quest), to Gravity Girl (Galaxy Trio), but they all pale in comparison to Tara.  Heck, she might be the character that launched me into puberty, lol!
This might be a mundane topic for my very first journal entry, but I have a very nostalgic fondness for this show, and a strong appreciation for the characters and artwork.  So, Happy 50th Anniversary, Herculoids!
